The Practice

How the work is made.

AI-assisted creative development is raw material, not output. It lets the studio look at hundreds of possibilities in the time a sketchbook allows for three. What it cannot do is choose. That part has not been automated, and this practice is built around it.

The descent

The descent

01

Explore without commitment

The first pass is deliberately wide. Surfaces, materials, densities, moods — generated fast and judged slowly. Nothing is precious at this stage, and nothing is kept because it was expensive to make.

02

Direct, then cut

Art direction is the actual work. A direction is chosen, the rest is discarded, and the chosen one is pushed until it stops improving. Most of what the studio produces never leaves the studio.

03

Resolve by hand

Nothing ships as it was generated. Composition, edge, contrast, colour behaviour and scale are settled by hand, at the size the object will actually be seen at.

04

Prove it as an object

A design that works on screen has proved nothing. It is checked against the material it will live on — weave, pigment, grain, sheen — and revised where the material disagrees.

05

Produce and present

Selected production and fulfilment infrastructure turns the finished concept into a physical product, made when wanted rather than warehoused. Presentation is treated as part of the product, not as marketing applied afterwards.

002

Why it is built this way

Speed is cheap now. Judgement is not.

Generative tools collapsed the cost of producing options. They did not collapse the cost of being right. The value of a studio has moved almost entirely into what it refuses to ship — which is why this practice spends most of its effort on subtraction.
